In the district of Muzzaffargarh, in Pakistan, there is an oil refinery of the Pak-Arab Refinery, PARCO, which is one of the largest in Asia. All the employees, except for the administrative staff and officers are on temporary contracts. Workers have been working here as contract workers for more than 20 years and all the promises of successive governments to make them permanent have never been kept.
After the registration of union the workers put forward their ten demands to the administration. Important demands included the transforming all employees into permanent workers, a share in the profits, a hospital and a school for the employees and people of the area. The administration sternly rejected these demands, upon which the workers called a gate meeting and placed banners around the refinery. On April 19, 2009 the Mazdoor Inssaf Union called a meeting of the Mazdoor Action Committee in Kot Addu which brings together 24 unions. In the emergency meeting of the Mazdoor Action Committee, the General Secretary of the Mazdoor Inssaf Union, Wahab ud din posed all the problems of his union.
Workers from the Telecom sector (PTCL), the Water and Power Development Authority, the Teachers' Union, students, lawyers, hospital workers, Revenue Department workers, Tehsil Administration Department, Veterinary department and other industries and departments participated in big numbers. All the workers insisted that the demands of the PARCO workers should be immediately accepted or they would take serious actions They also appealed to the workers of other cities and industries to come raise solidarity with the PARCO workers. The participants of the rally also appealed to workers of the world to send solidarity messages to the PARCO workers. Please use this form to send messages. |
